This year the Midwest and Gascoyne regions have
a new Regional Development Officer. Dan Hunt has been hired and though Dan is new to the role he is certainly not new to the area or to coaching. Dan was an original member of the Geraldton Buccaneers, playing 16 seasons for the Buccs and has lived in Geraldton for 25 years. Dan and his wife Helen recently returned from eight years in California where their boys went to high school. During his time in California Dan coached at the high school, middle school and primary school levels. Dan loves coaching all ages making him ideal for the RDO position.
Even though Dan resides in Geraldton one of the aspects of the job that gets him excited is the op- portunity to travel to other Midwest and Gascoyne communities to deliver the basketball message. To Dan basketball is more than just a game. It helped him get an education and travel the world. Dan says, “basketball has given me so much more than just the opportunity to play the game I love. It is the plac-
es you see and the people you meet. I have many wonderful friends and incredible people in my life. Almost all of them come from my time playing, coaching or watching my sons play. Basketball gives the same opportunities to the Midwest and Gascoyne athletes whether it be travelling to another town to play in a tournament, Perth for Country Week or over East for National competitions. Basketball WA presents many opportunities and it is my job to help them see the pathway.”
"Dan’s message to all players,
Play Hard, Have Fun and Never Quit!
Do these three things in basketb"
all or life and you are always a winner!

In 2019 Zane Bricite was appointed to the newly created role of Regional Development Manager in the South West. This greatly expanded our capacity in the region and our ability to engage with people locally.
3X3 EVENTS
Various 3x3 events took place in South West in 2019, we partnered up with City of Bunbury to deliver a 3X3 during the SHIFT festival, held in the heart of Bunbury. This saw many locals joining in for a game, and some staying for the whole day. We also worked with Surfing WA to deliver a 3-day 3X3 tournament in Margaret River and assisted Yaka Group to deliver a successful tournament during the NAIDOC week.
SMARTER THAN SMOKING
SCHOOL SLAM SERIES
BWA run The Smarter than Smoking Slam Series for the primary schools in the South West Region. For the first time, we were able to run this in 2 venues – Busselton and Bunbury. We partnered up with SEDA to ensure we educate and develop young leaders in our sport. Students assisted with refereeing, coaching and running the event on the day. Slam Series is expect- ed to grow even bigger this year, with more primary schools joining in from Dunsborough and Margaret River as we cruised through the region and delivered over 80 school clinics that captured over 3000 pupils.
