Basketball Great Southern
GREAT SOUTHERN
2019 was a successful and busy year in the Great Southern! From Aussie Hoops, growth in associations and new programs in the region the levels of development have increased rapidly.
AUSSIE HOOPS
There is a introductory program at every association leading into competitions with Albany having one of the largest Aussie Hoops centres. These programs have been crucial to sustained numbers in competitions allowing for growth in the sport.
SCHOOLS
The region ran both a High School carnival (22 Teams) and a Primary School carnival (14 Teams) in 2019 and were hugely successful. There is opportunity to grow and develop in this area throughout the region.
BWA STATE & COUNTRY CHAMPS
The Great Southern sent over 35 teams to Country Champs along with 16 to State Champs in 2019. Both the highest on record and improvement in this area is leading to a sustained pathway for participants. The high number of teams with aspirations to compete at these competitions show the associations improve- ment at the base level.
DOUST CUP
In 2019 the region also ran a successful tournament in the Doust Cup. All Great Southern Associations participated across U13s and U14s age groups. This is another area which has potential for growth and will be run across more age groups this coming year.
GREAT SOUTHERN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
The Great Southern Development Program (GSDP) was launched in 2019 to fill a gap in the Great Southern with no pathway for young athletes in many years. The program is a direct pathway to the State Performance Program and Southern Cross Challenge. The program ran throughout the winter (April-July) with two camps and 2 full Sundays. This
is a major breakthrough having basketball being played throughout the winter. Group/Individual sessions run by Network coaches were held fortnightly in different areas throughout the region.
The program focused in on being professional and aimed to develop basketball athletes on and off the court – physical conditioning, flexibility, profession- alism (how to take care of your body and nutrition). The program had a sports trainer/physiotherapist speak to and teach the athletes how to take care of their body and the importance of doing things correctly before and after sessions. The program also had a nutritionist speak with the athletes about the correct way to eat before and after sessions to perform at the peak of their ability.
The program led to over 30 athletes’ trial in Perth at both SCC and SPP which is 3 times more than ever before. This will lead to more opportunity for Great Southern Athletes which will continue to grow in the future.
