 Association Development
TOP CLUB AND TOP PLAN
The Top Plan governance tools continued to be rolled out in 2019/20 with both regional and metro Associations engaging in the real time online governance tool. An initiative from the Western Australian Sports Federation, supported by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. The tool allows Associations and Clubs to identify and drive areas of their governance and culture to ensure sustainability and strong inclusive environments for their members and stakeholders.
ASSOCIATIONS INCORPORATIONS ACT CHANGES
New laws have been passed which are aimed at helping incorporated associations in WA operate more efficiently by providing them with a clearer framework in which to operate.
The new law will replace the existing Associations Incorporation Act 1987 and will apply to all existing incorporated associations in Western Australia. It is the culmination of many years of work by the Department and key stakeholders in the not for profit sector and will provide incorporated associations with a legal framework that reflects modern
expectations around corporate governance and the need to protect the privacy of association members.
The changes came into effect from 1 July 2016. Basketball WA has been providing information and resources including step by step guides to assist incorporated associations through this transition period. Associations and Clubs ensured their constitutions were amended to meet the new legislative standards of the Associations Incorporations Act by July 1st 2019.
ROYAL COMMISSION INTO INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSES TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
The Association Development Team has been working with Sports West regarding the State Government response to the Royal Commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse. We are continuing to work in this space during the Covid 19 crises and look to provide further information out to Associations in the coming months to ensure our sport provides safe spaces for our children to participate and learn in.
