Echoes of the White Mountains:
Emphasizing History, Heritage, and Storytelling
 By Brittany amalfi
One might be familiar with the brick building at 34 Highland Street in Plymouth, but people who drive by might not know of the cultural, artistic, and environ- mental legacies the solid building holds inside. When the building was built in 1946, it was once the Plymouth United Methodist Church for many years. Then, in 2010, once the congregation built a new home on Fairgrounds Road, the building was bought by Plymouth State University. On February 23, 2013, The Museum of the White Mountains at Plym- outh State University opened, and a legacy was born.
The museum curates and presents phenomenal exhibi- tions all year in the Main Up- stairs Gallery of the Museum building and the Silver Center for the Arts Lobby Gallery. ties that support a wide array of curriculum areas throughout the academic year. It is a place where creative individuals can practice their niche in artistic ways to pres- ent to the public.
The different exhibits that are presented to the public dis- play a variety of rich topics that enhance learning and growth for the community. Some past exhibits have been Celebrating Youth Art, In the Path of Totality, Echoes of Resilience: Unveiling Stories of Devastation, Survival
and Hope, Of Baskets and Bor- ers: The Past, Present, and Future of Indigenous Basketry in the White Mountains, and a plethora of more. There is no shortage of artistic and intellectual topics that aim to enrich the community while creating a welcoming space for everyone.
The Museum of the White Mountains is deep in the trenches of some spectacular exhibits that have been running for quite a while. Right now, you can ex- perience Silent Shifts: Evolving
Winters in the White Mountains, which runs from January 21st to March 29th. The project explores how simultaneous changes in our climate, technology, and access to the outdoors are affecting our ex- perience of winter.
From January 21st to April 4th, the Museum is putting on Emerging: Annual PSU Student Juried Art Exhibition. The exhi- bition at the Silver Center for the Arts celebrates the talent, work, and passion of PSU student art- ists and the total spectrum of PSU’s Art and Design program. Every year, students are invited to submit their best work, no matter
where they are in their develop- ment.
Beginning on April 12th and running until May 3rd, muse- um-goers can experience the Art and Design Capstone Exhibition, which is the annual art and design capstone. This exhibition can be found at the museum and the lobby of the Silver Center for the Arts.
The Museum of the White Mountains at Plymouth State University aims to provide a multitude of cultural, artistic, and environmental projects to the community to foster enrich- ment with a community-centered focus. Through exhibitions, ed- ucational programs, and collab- orative initiatives, the museum creates opportunities for learning, reflection, and connection. By celebrating the region’s heritage and inspiring future generations, it serves as a vital hub for artistic expression, environmental aware- ness, and cultural appreciation.
