2023 is about to be an exciting year for Franklin High School because, on February 17th, they have their official kickoff of the Winter Carnival! There has been a variation of the winter carnival happening throughout the years, but more recently, they have taken a different approach. Over the past few years, the stu- dent council has made sure that the student body has a voice in this fun-filled event that leaves the high schoolers feeling like young kids.
The students of Franklin High School were able to com- plete a survey so they could voice what they wanted to see during the events of the winter carni- val. When students have a say in what they want, especially for something so fun and full of life within the school walls, they are eager to participate. Giving this opportunity gives them a chance to participate in the fun and keep the spirit of FHS.
With February 17th being the official kick-off, the last two blocks of the student’s day will be filled with different games that both the students and staff can participate in. In addition, the student council has also collaborated with the Franklin Outing Club to do all-ages card- board sled races from 11 AM- 12 PM on February 18th! The sled event will be a fantastic event, and it will give the high school-

ers an opportunity to interact with other community members as well as other youths.
The fun doesn’t stop on the 18th, though! From the 20th to the 24th, FHS will have a week full of spirit days. There will be entertaining activities at different times of the day that students can partake in. From Pictionary to the recycled run- way to a dodgeball tournament and snow sculptures, the student council has really worked hard to get the students an enjoyable carnival while listening to their input. And let’s not forget about the themes! February 21st will
be Adam Sandler Day or dress up like a celebrity day. The 22nd will be the student-teacher swap, the 23rd will be Decades Day, and the themes are wrapped up on the 24th with Formal Friday!
And on the 24th, there will be even more to look forward to. Students can sign up to showcase their diverse talents to other stu- dents in a show. There will also be a lip sync event in which both the students and staff can partic- ipate, and finally, they will wrap up with a semi-formal dance with a “Winter Wonderland” theme!
I was able to speak with Jenna
Chou, the Student Council Ad- visor, and she had a multitude of great things to say about the winter carnival as well as the student council. “Really seeing the students of FHS take part in non-traditional school models is so great to experience,” Chou said. “Since the events are based on what students want to see, it gives everyone a chance to have a voice.” In addition, the student council has worked so hard on organizing the carnival. Chou told me that the students made it a priority to add more events during the school day to bolster the fun. “The best part of all
of this is watching the student council learn and grow as lead- ers as they organize this. There is just so much authentic joy for the carnival, and it provides the vibrant atmosphere of FHS,” said Chou.
The FHS student council comprises Leah Cote, Ayden Barton, Hailey Collins, Olivia Sylvester, Lillian Corrow, Lily Johnson, Caelin Stockbridge, and Evan Hardy. When asked what the winter carnival meant to them, the response was very heartfelt. “They all noted look-
