Plymouth Celebrates a New Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient
By Donna rhoDes
PLYMOUTH—After ten years as a member of Girl Scout Troop 59183, earning numerous awards, badges, and recogni- tions along the way, 15-year-old Ella Duchette recently finished her final scouting project, which qualified her for a Gold Award, the Girl Scouts’ equivalent of the Scouting America Eagle Scout Award.
Earning a Gold Award comes through the completion of sev- eral rigorous requirements. Girl Scouts seeking the award must be a Senior or Ambassador Scout and in grades nine through twelve. They also must complete either two Senior or Ambassa- dor Journeys or one Journey in addition to earning a Girl Scout Silver Award. Next, they have to complete the Gold Award’s
online orientation program and attend a Gold Award Workshop. Finally, each must identify a community issue and investigate it. From there, they need to seek out help and build a team, create a plan and, present it, and then gather feedback on that plan. Once the project is underway, they are also required to spend at least 80 hours working toward its completion.
For her Community Issue re- quirement, Ella chose to tackle isolation and loneliness. Recog- nizing that older members of Plymouth may experience both of those at times, she decided to first bring high school students together with the Plymouth Se- nior Center for activities. She invited Parks and Recreation to team up with the seniors as well. As a result, the two organizations now advertise their events and

activities with each other, bring- ing participants in each organi- zation more awareness of what is happening in the community.
Ella didn’t stop there, though. She organized Community Pickle Ball for residents of all ages and also began an Open
Gym for little ones where they could make friends and get some healthy exercise at the same time.
Next, it was on her to the final
