Seventh Grader Shines by Creating Care Kits
Every year, the seventh-grade class at Newfound Memorial Middle School engages in a spe- cial social studies project, iden- tifying a community issue they believe needs more attention. The project's objective is for students to take informed action on a topic they are passionate about, thereby making a positive contribution to the community. One student, however, went beyond the proj- ect's expectations, choosing a topic she was not only passionate about, but also determined to make a significant impact on.
Seventh grader Alexa wanted to test her passions. She brain- stormed ideas with NMMS’s social worker and guidance coun-
selors, Jen Kastick and Kellie Jen- kins, and Alexa came up with the goal of creating care kits to give to children who are going to live with relatives or go into foster care.
Alexa's resourcefulness was evi- dent in her approach to gathering donations for the care kits. In ad- dition to creating a poster appeal- ing for essential items, she took on an opportunity when NMMS’ Be- Sweet Cart, typically used to raise funds for Unified Sports, was tem- porarily repurposed to support her cause. This initiative raised $118, which she promptly used to purchase items for the kits.
Alexa made fourteen bags for students at NMMS and six bags for students at Bristol Elemen- tary School. Alexa and her mom
made the kits and brought them

to the school.
Alexa’s project didn’t stop at
the care kits. The seventh grader also was a guest speaker for the members of Parenting a Second Time Around (PASTA). On that day, Alexa came in, gave a speech, and she did a fantastic job. It was evident how passionate she was about this topic.
“She’s got a vision at just twelve years old,” Christina Cronin, sev- enth-grade social studies teacher, said. “She’s on cloud nine. She is so proud of herself.” Cronin went on to say Alexa even asked if she could continue her project even though she hit her goal, which just shows how passionate Alexa is about this and all the good she’s going to do.
“We are so proud of Alexa
and this class,” Cronin continued. “The whole project is a win-win for everyone because students get to pick a topic they’re passionate about, and they give back to the community in their own way.”
Christina went on to say that this year, in particular, has been extra special with the 118 kids in the class. Students have done ex- ceptional things such as planting potted pants, donating to the hu- mane society, teaching robotics at
the Tapply-Thompson Commu- nity Center, buying chickens so they could donate eggs, cleaning up the hiking trail at Slim Baker, building benches for the New Hampton Community School, or creating donation boxes to the TTCC summer camps.
Alexa’s dedication to her social studies project highlights the posi- tive impact one student can make on their community. By creating care kits for children entering foster care or living with rela- tives, she provided much-needed support and inspired others. Her hard work and determination brought attention to an important issue and set an excellent example for her classmates. As Mrs. Cro- nin noted, these projects benefit everyone, fostering responsibility and compassion in students while helping the community. Alexa’s efforts show the value of encour- aging young people to take action on issues they care about.
