What is this NLRA anyway? A bunch of lobbyists who fight for the right to bear arms? Nope, that’s another enthusi- astic bunch. We ‘re the New- found Lake Region Association whose goals focus on the pro- tection and preservation of our namesake, Newfound Lake.
We came into being on a warm August evening in 1985 when 350 or so concerned citi- zens thought somebody, some- how, somewhere around here should assess what’s happen- ing, if anything, Lo our lake. “Too manv boats!”. “What about all those condos?” and, Throttle the developers!’’, were cries by well-intentioned lakers fearful old Newfound was on its way to a fetid bog.
Happily, there followed an evening of sensible discussion, our Association was born, and a work schedule was developed by then president, John Gem- mill. Specifically, through our boat tally every August, we’ve learned that the number of boats is slightly increasing, but not alarmingly. And, “those condos? Well, they’re to the liking of many good folks and an improvement in some in-

stances to what had been, espe- cially their new septic systems. How about throttling “those” developers? Well, throttle de- velopment and we end up in the economic fix we’re in right now. Like it? Me neither.
At this qualm juncture we’d like to press for less hazardous development when it gets going again. Maybe the future build- ers could tune into avoiding steep hillsides and perhaps use soil capacity as a determinate for the suitability for building lots. Show concern in land use.
Initially, our focus was on the lake but if we’ve learned anything since that August night, it’s that what runs into that water spells prosperity or pollution. so, our focus has broadened to include the wa- tershed--that big geographic funnel whose rim is the tip tops of all the hills one sees sur- rounding the lake. Any rain on our side of those hills are im- portant to Newfound’s health.
We’re environmentalists who are also local town offi- cers, tradesmen, nurses, real- tors; the usual gamut of people found in any New Hampshire community. A dozen years ago I would’ve hesitated using that word, “environmentalists’’, but times have changed. We’re out of our closets and not counted among the kooks anymore. In fact, environmentalists pres- ently come in short versions, too – our kids are now being taught this respect for the
earth in school from kinder- garten on up. I have a wonder- ful positive feeling about the future. It’s linked to what some of these youngsters will do for us in solving the problems of deforestation, acid rain, and those constant companions, our bags of garbage. Just think if you’re over forty, you’ve lived through a period in which the environmental fad has become the norm and high time.
