July Shining Stars: Tiffany Agro and Bruno Cruz-Martinez By Kelsey cote
Newfound Regional High School was lucky enough to have two foreign exchange students that were three-season athletes and stellar students. Tiffany Agro, from Belgium, and Bruno Cruz-Martinez, from Spain, are the perfect examples of what Newfound is meant to be.
Tiffany was eager to play vol- leyball in the fall. She had never played before but was very ex- cited. She ended up making the JV team but participated as a swinger for the varsity team. She helped her team win their back- to-back state championship. She worked tirelessly on her serve and wouldn’t end the practice until she hit the goal Coach Fairbank set for her. Tiffany then moved on to play basketball, which was her primary sport. She quickly earned her spot on the varsity roster and helped her team make it to their 4th straight final four performance. However, playing basketball in America is very dif-
ferent than playing in Belgium. Tiffany learned a lot from Coach Danielle, but she also taught her team as well. Tiffany had only previously played a man defense, but when she was asked to play a zone, she struggled but put her heart and soul into learning it and even teaching her team a thing or two about man. Finally, Tiffany knew she wanted to play a spring sport. She had never touched a softball in her life but decided to make the most out of her experience here and try it. She was the biggest cheerleader for her team and exemplified great sportsmanship. Through- out all three seasons, Tiffany demonstrated sportsmanship by congratulating the other team, saying nice job even if we came out on top, and complimenting individuals who did well.
Besides being a three-season athlete, she maintained a GPA of 3.55, was an NH scholar-ath- lete and received multiple awards on Senior night. One of these awards included excellence in Spanish. This is Tiffany’s fourth language that she has learned. The efforts that Tiffany put in on her sports teams and in the class- rooms will be greatly missed.
Bruno was very excited to play soccer for Newfound. His host brother was a captain for the team, and watching the two of them play together was fantastic. Bruno struggled to adhere to the type of soccer that is played here in America versus how he plays in Spain, but that didn’t stop him. He brought so much energy into the soccer team and helped them have one of the best seasons they have had in a while. Bruno was
on the fence about playing bas- ketball, but a majority of the soc- cer team also played, so he was convinced to do it. Bruno ended up being a leader on the JV boys basketball team and learned the game quickly and learned it well. He also participated in boys’ track and field this season as a sprinter.
Just like Tiffany, Bruno never hesitated to tell someone what a good job they did, whether it was his own teammate or someone from the opposing team. He al- ways has a smile on his face and is eager to learn. He never wanted to be taken out of a game. He got
a bloody nose during a basketball game and couldn’t understand why he had to come out; he just wanted to play. Dedication is one of his best qualities. This dedica- tion continued in the classroom, where he earned a 3.4 GPA.
Both of these students made a huge impact on the Newfound community, and they are leav- ing a massive hole as they return home. We wish them well in their future endeavors and thank them for representing Newfound well every chance they got, and we hope they come back to visit!
