Don’t you just love when a plan comes together? I have had decent results this spring pursuing pre-spawn and spawning Bass. I had good luck throwing spinner baits in water that was ten feet deep or less, right up to
the shoreline. I found
plenty of fish in shallow
water, some on the bed
and others just cruising,
either pre-spawn or post
spawn. I caught a few
that were just off the
bed, females that had
some wear and tear on
their tales. No really big
fish, but a few that were
four to five pound class.
Water temperatures are still on the rise, so fishing shallow will continue to get more productive. Throwing creature-type soft plas- tic baits produced also, especially by placing small lizards on the bed and got some fish to attack the invaders.
My favorite type of fishing is throwing top water presentations. My lure of choice is the mini double buzzbait, followed closely by throwing imitation frogs in and around the weeds and Lilly pads. Whatever your favorite top water lure is, start throwing them
at night. Be sure to adjust your gear to the situation, a bit heavier line and a more sturdy pole are a good bet for landing the big one at night in the weeds. I nor- mally use a 6 foot 6 inch medium heavy pole, and string it with no less than 12 pound test, spinning
or baitcasting reel, depends on the sit- uation and the type of conditions. Some guys live and die by one type of reel, I have both spinning and baitcasters, and prefer one type over another as conditions and styles require. It pays to master the use
and techniques for each type of reel, so you can smoothly tran- sition between the two without missing a beat when the situation dictates it. As always, good luck and take the time to mentor the next generation of anglers.

Educator who most inspired you and why: Thomas Rollins enjoys having fun in class. You can tell that he teaches because he enjoys being around his stu- dents and cares about them personally, not just about their learning. I personally experience his caring when he makes sure to include me when he gives out food in class. I have Celiac Dis- ease, so I usually cannot eat most things at school. Mr. Rollins asks me what I can have and makes sure it is available so that I am never left out. These small acts of kindness really make some- one’s day.
