The snow and ice are now gone and have given way to in- creasingly warmer days and longer periods of daylight. This can only mean that quality open water fishing opportunities are on the near horizon, about time!! The water temps will continue to slowly increase, and as they do, the fish will become more active and head for the shallows, which is exactly where the Bass enthu- siasts want them. I usually start to get geared up as water temps near 60 degrees. For Largemouth enthusiasts, this means bedding fish in shallow water, which in turn means greater opportuni- ties for a personal best (PB) tro- phy fish. But we as responsible stewards of this resource should return all fish caught during this time so as to keep the big fish gene pool going in our favorite honey holes. Fish on the bed are a much easier target, they will defend their nests and will react to invasive forays into their nests making them susceptible to a wide variety of techniques and
tactics. My early season favorites are soft plastic creature baits and worm-like baits. Imitation worm and lizards are my go to baits, and can be rigged in numerous ways according to conditions at the time and the personal tactics, techniques and procedures that the angler plans to employ. I have had my best results Texas rigging a worm or lizard, it’s what I grew up with and have years of expe- rience perfecting. I normally use a spinning reel and a rod that’s a bit longer and healthier than I would typically use for top water or bait casting, a 6’6” medium action rod to a medium heavy action rod. As far as line choice, as a rule for bedding fish, I like a bit of over kill, 15 pound test line is the lightest I will go with at this time of year. If you choose to go lighter, make sure your drag is in good working condition because you will be needing it.
Every Bass fishing enthusiast has their own approach to this time of year, which is usually based on personal experience and past success. Use whatever
tactics, techniques and pro- cedures you are comfortable with and have produced your desired results in the past. Try out new techniques and grow as a fisherman. Go fishing with as many different fishermen as you can manage as you can learn and teach others at the same time. Speaking for myself, fishing and spent time out of doors in general, is always more fun when shared with a buddy, family member, or newcomer to the sport. Research as much as you can, and arm yourself with knowledge. As I always say sometimes...knowledge is good!! There is no shortage of sites you can visit on the Google ma- chine loaded with instructional and informational videos on all manners of new gear, techniques and the old standby time tested favorites. Somebody famous once said, “give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime”, or something very similar. Good luck, have fun, and hopefully see you on the water soon.
