munity, which shows what kind of people they are.” Overall, the student athletic lead- ership team has made tremendous posi- tive impacts in their school community
as well as the Newfound com- munity, and only plans to keep going. The efforts of these stu- dents have shown not only how hardworking they are but also how caring they are with the individuals around them. These students are the true definition of leaders and will continue to grow that way. Tivey concluded, “The Student Athletic Leader- ship Team is developing skills to be lifelong learners in a practi- cal sense, and it’s helping them learn to be life-long leaders.”

High school can be a pivotal time for a lot of young students. It’s the time when they really begin to learn who they are and what kind of person they aim to be as they grow and take in the world around them. For some, they grow up to be extraordi- nary leaders and take on roles that put them in a place where they can do some good for this world. At Newfound Regional High School, the Student Ath- letic Leadership Team (SALT) is cultivating a group of hard- working leaders that the com- munity is lucky to have.
The Student Athletic Lead- ership Team was founded over ten years ago by Peter Cofran and has been thriving to this day. The team has really come a long way since starting out piggybacking off of Life of an Athlete. Jacob Tivey, the Ath- letic Director for NRHS, said they had started out with eight students this year, but are now at fourteen. “The whole process of
Learning To Be Leaders
joining the team is important,” Tivey said. “There are applica- tions and a whole interview pro- cess, so it’s also a big learning experience for all the students involved. They get to be on both sides of the interview process.”
The SALT team is made up of student-athletes who are also higher achieving in the ac- ademic field. “They’re leaders on the field and the court, and they’re the exemplary students we look for,” Jacob added. In addition, the students work to better the school and improve the atmosphere for the whole building, all while making a positive difference within the sports teams. “They’re basically the groundwork of athletics,” the athletic director said. As I learned about the student ath- letic leadership team and what they do, I realized that they do so much every day. From ticket sales to concessions to volunteer work, they are basically the eyes and ears of student athletics. “They are a bunch of problem
solvers,” Jacob stated.
The teams genuinely know
how to give back to their com- munity as well as their school. They just participated in the Winni Dip and raised just shy of 4000 dollars for the Special Olympics. All of the kids took the plunge, along with Jacob and Kelsey Cote, the Athletic Trainer.
When asked if there was a team captain, Jacob said, “They’re all leaders. They all work together to solve prob- lems.”
The students who are a part of this team are involved not only in sports but in other clubs as well. Jacob informed me that these kids are highly involved in different clubs and organizations as they continue to gain knowl- edge and skills. Some team members are part of student council, yearbook committee, and much more. The team is very aware of the atmosphere at the school, and they work hard to make a positive impact on
it every day. Tivy told me they put out small message boards, and right now, they are focusing on mental health awareness in athletes. The team is promot- ing awareness of the struggles athletes can face every day and want to ensure that there are re- sources and supports available if anyone needs them.
When asked what he admired most about the team, Jacob said, “They’re always willing to dive in, help, and improve the school culture. They do it because they know it’s helping the school com-
