During the early 2000s, the amount of plastic waste that pol- luted the environment rose more in a single decade than it did in over 40 years. Now, the world sees 400 million tons of plastic waste every year. The Sustain- ability Committee of Bristol has a mission to do its part in reduc- ing the use of plastic waste in the environment. The committee knows the adverse effects that plastic has on our planet, and they want to spread awareness. So back in 2020, The Sustain- ability Committee was formed to get Bristol to start recycling again.
On Friday, April 21st, the day before Earth Day, The Sustain- ability Committee partnered with Hannafords to give out reusable bags to customers to encourage

them to use reusable instead of one-use plastic bags. Hannafords donated all of the reusable bags to the committee to help spread the word on reducing the use of plastic to better the environment. The committee approached the manager of Hannafords, and he was on board to take part in the event.
I had the opportunity to speak with Nancy Dowey, the Chair of the Sustainability Committee, and she told me that “discarded plastic bags end up everywhere, in the oceans and even the food chain as they break down, and they can take 500 years to bio- degrade.” The overextended use of plastic bags is detrimental to the earth and its longevity, so it’s up to us humans to do something about it.
Ideally, the use of fabric bags would be what everyone main-
tains, but reusable plastic bags can help. Both can just be left in the car for when people go grocery shopping, and they can be easy to store. In some states, there are laws banning the use of plastic bags altogether, but un- fortunately, New Hampshire has not enacted that.
Even though there are no laws in place, many people and businesses are doing their part to reduce the use of single-use plas- tic. “All Hannafords have plastic bags collection containers out- side their stores, and then they go to Trex, an organization that turns plastic into decking.”
The event was a success! The committee gave out 200 free bags and bookmarks for the kids. And now, the people of Newfound have a better idea and more awareness of the effects of sin- gle-use plastic. In order to do our part, we have to start being warier about the single-use plas- tic we use in our day-to-day lives. The change begins with us, and it begins with being persistent.
TIPS TO REDUCE SINGLE-USE PLASTIC:
• Carry reusable shopping bags with you
• Shop at a farmer’s market to reduce buying the food that is typically packaged in plastic
• Drink coffee or tea from a reusable cup
• Carry around a reusable water
bottle instead of using plastic
ones
• For straws, switch out to paper or metal
• Avoid plastic wrap by storing leftovers in reusable contain- ers
• Buy in bulk. Avoid individual- ly packaged goods
• Use reusable eating utensils instead of plastic cutlery while you’re on the go
• Join a clean-up crew or event
