I love nothing more than a fantasy, but a dark fantasy just hits differently. M.K. Lobb has crafted a magnificent book filled with saints, disciples, and grip- ping magic unlike any I have ever seen. “In the city of Ombrazia, saints and their disciples rule with terrifying and unjust power, play- ing favorites while the unfavored struggle to survive.” After losing her father to the corrupt power games of an unjust government, rebel, Rossana Lacertosa has made a vow to take them down, no matter what it takes. With the powers of a disciple of Patience, Roz is strong enough to infiltrate the inner working of the Palazzo. Only, when her mission to solve a series of gruesome murders brings her back to the very boy who broke her heart Roz begins
Book of the Month: Seven Faceless Saints by M.K. Lobb
to question how strong she really
is.
Damian Venturi, a newly-ap-
pointed Palazzo guard and mag- ic-less, knows that when someone inside the Palazzo is murdered, something sinister is lurking in Ombrazia. Conflicted by his feel- ing toward his military-leader fa- ther, his duty, and the girl he once loved, Damian soon finds him- self being pulled in a thousand different directions. But Damian just wants to do what’s right, and that’s solving these murders. So when he strikes a deal with Roz to work together to uncover the dark truth, every fiber of his being is challenged.
Seven Faceless Saints might be dark, but it is so fresh in the world of fantasy. With the majority of fantasy books being practically the same magic system and mainstream characters, Lobb’s book was exactly what I needed to rediscover my love for dark stories. Her whimsical writing was interwoven with her vivid landscapes and enigmatic char- acters. Roz and Damian had such distinct voices throughout the whole story, and how the dynamic between the two pro-
vided a captivating balance re- ally pushed this story along to the
end. Both of the characters were highly fleshed out and so com-
plex that they were a pleasure to read. I was certainly rooting for both of them!
Roz and Damian’s relation- ship didn’t take away from the eerie mystery that was happen- ing in the veiled city of Om- brazia. There were plenty of clues and characters that had me guessing in wildly different directions throughout the en- tire book. But that’s what I love when reading a story. Lobb took a murder mystery and inter- twined it with the dark magic of saints and disciples. The history of this story also added a lot of depth as well. Learning about all of the different saints and their roles put an exciting twist and set this book apart from all the other genre-bending fantasies that are out there.
Seven Faceless Saints was fast- paced and compelling from start to finish, all while being easy to understand. This book is full of romantic drama, betrayal, magic, and all the stabbing, which pro- vides quite the roller coaster ride. An excellent read to get anyone out of a reading slump and any- one who enjoys a darker side of fantasy.
