from “stella,” meaning star or one who brings light. Those in attendance at her 20-year cele- bration hold the fond hope that Estelle will continue to brighten the church’s services and their lives with sound and song per- formed flawlessly, but seasoned at times, with the addition of an inspired innovation, which is not a surprising spontaneity for such a “cool” person.

student in a class of males, all of whom seemed to be some- what familiar with computers. Compared to the males, she felt ill-prepared and somewhat over- whelmed when facing the com- puter screen.
Relying more on intuition than rationality, she sought out a promising hypnotist. The hyp- notist, speaking from a dark- ened corner of his “study,” told the unsure student to imagine the computer as a grand piano and its keyboard as the ebony and ivory of that wonderful instrument. Back in school, Es- telle tried the “hypnotic sugges-
tion.” It worked! Estelle would progress quickly through the required curriculum in spite of the fact that she was balancing school with an all-night security guard position an hour away in Boston.
The skills Estelle learned at Johnson and Wales would even- tually provide her with the op- portunity to enhance America’s role as a world power. At age 52, she was hired with security clearance to work at Anteon Corporation in Newport, RI. cepts for Trident Class Subma- rines”, including designs for Trident “control stations”. After thirteen years, Estelle left An- teon with an award for distin- guished service. She then moved to Laconia, New Hampshire, to live with her son, Patsy. She was retirement age, 65.
Estelle, as one might imag- ine, wasn’t about to stay “re- tired”. With her son's departure for employment in Maine, she moved to an affordable cottage on Weirs Beach. Although her new “home” was large enough to provide space for a recently purchased grand piano, it was located in a somewhat “risky neighborhood” adjacent to a ca- sino. In 2005, planning to move
to a more secure setting, Estelle needed to supplant her retire- ment income. She discovered an ad in the local paper for a posi- tion as organist and choir direc- tor at Bristol’s United Church of Christ. Estelle applied, and the search committee was immedi- ately enchanted. She was hired and was able to relocate to a secure “senior” condo closer to Bristol. The United Church of Christ celebrated Estelle’s 20th anniversary as its music director this past month.
Recently, as Estelle reflected on her past life and her pres- ent circumstances, she summed things up by saying, “God is so good to me.”
