Happy Holidays! Your Insurance Guy
By Jim King neWfounD insuRance
It’s that time of the year again. The clocks have been set back, the days are getting shorter and the sun sets ever earlier. That bruising North wind feels a little harsher.
The seasonal change or as some call it the “shoulder season” is an opportunity to take steps to mitigate potential problems around the home that could lead to damage during the winter and early spring that results in an in-
surance claim.
It’s a good time to evaluate and
trim any tree branches that might break under the weight of snow and damage the roof or a deck. Keep in mind that a late season snow in the spring after the leaves have started to come out can be even more damaging to trees than a mid-season storm because of the weight of wetter snow and how it adheres to the new leaves. Now is the time to get out the pruning saw or potentially hire a contractor to take care of that trimming.
Speaking of your roof, do a quick visual check to see if there are any loose or worn shingles that should be replaced. Better to do it now than in the midst of well below zero temperatures. As the
old saying goes – “A stitch in time saves nine’.
Any lawn or patio furniture should be properly stored away. If storage isn’t an option, then secure the furniture in a way that strong winter winds won’t blow it about, potentially breaking a win- dow or damaging a sliding glass door.
Now is the time to get that new shovel and some salt to use for the walkway. There is no need for the delivery driver with the latest package from Amazon to slip and fall on your walkway, get hurt and then sue you. That experience would have a way of ruining your Holiday Cheer.
In summary, now is the time, while the temperatures are still reasonably warm, to do a quick
risk survey of your property. Look at everything with a critical eye and address anything that could cause damage leading to an in- surance claim.
If you need more motivation, understand that in the event of a claim, the insurance company will look for reasons to deny your claim. Lack of maintenance or poor maintenance of the prop- erty, that is, neglecting to take proper care of something that
