Stand Up Newfound, Irradicate Substance Abuse
By SuzaNNe l. thiStle, ma, mlaDc
Bryan Richardson faced an unimaginable loss when his son, Mark, died of an overdose in 2010. Devastated by this mis- fortune and faced with minimal resources, Bryan and his wife Debbie quickly realized they wanted to assist others who had been through similar situations. Their passion for helping people prompted them to approach the Tapply Thompson Community Center in Bristol to begin the Stand Up Newfound (SUN) or- ganization.
The word spread rapidly, and community members joined them to work on reducing sub- stance misuse in the Newfound Lake region. Their combined efforts were the genesis of the crucial task of irradicating this problem. As you may already realize, this is no small venture. Yet, Stand Up Newfound con- tinues to shine a light on the issue. The Richardson's and
their partners bring awareness and education to the Newfound area by addressing substance use disorder prevention, interven- tion, treatment, and recovery.
Stand Up Newfound benefits from hearing the voices of peo- ple in recovery and their fami- lies who have lived experiences. Their knowledge brings a host of valuable information and re- sources to the table. In addition, SUN endorses the efforts of Nar-Anon, a 12-step program for families and friends of indi- viduals with substance use dis- orders. You can find their local meeting times on the SUN web page. Other recovery support group information is also avail- able there. So, don't let stigma prevent you from seeking help with your addiction or assisting someone you care about who has this disorder. Instead, reach out to one of these programs.
Volunteers at Stand Up Newfound care about you and understand what you're going
through. If you want to speak to someone at SUN, call the num- ber below. You are not alone and will feel comforted by others, no matter how bad it may seem. SUN volunteers do not judge and are available to help you get your needs met. So, there is no need to suffer in silence. The SUN website and Facebook page also offer resources for folks who live in rural areas and have inadequate transportation.
Naloxone training is deliv- ered by Stand Up Newfound
volunteers as well. Naloxone (or Narcan) is used to reverse the effects of an opiate overdose. If you have a family member or friend who abuses opiates, hav- ing Naloxone on hand is cru- cial, you could save a life. If you want to know more about the next Naloxone training, contact SUN.
Whether you are a full or part-time resident of the New- found Lake area, please join SUN and volunteer as much or as little as you can? If you are in recovery from a substance use disorder or have a family mem- ber with this illness, your service is needed. Please call or write Bryan or Debbie and help them with their mission.
