Memorial Day
The Kickoff to Summer and More
By Jim king newfounD insuRance
Memorial Day is the unoffi- cial kickoff of Summer. Techni- cally Summer begins Thursday June 20th but if you are like me, the mooring ball is in as soon as the ice is out, the boat is in the water the first week of May and Memorial Day weekend is when Summer really starts.
With the kickoff of Summer, thoughts turn to brilliant sun- shine-soaked days on the lake, swimming, boats, water skiing and summer toys like jet skis.
The focus is always on making sure the proper main- tenance was done over the win- ter, washing and waxing the boat and jet ski to remove the winter debris and getting gas at West Shore Marine, hoping the line isn’t too long.
Not to be overlooked is the need for the proper insurance coverage. At the least, there should be liability and medial coverage. You don’t want to paying out of pocket for dam- age to your boat or someone else’s boat or Jet Ski as a result of a collision. Perhaps worse in so many ways for everyone, is dealing with the liability if someone is injured while you are boating or jet skiing. The cost of hospitalization and medical care could be stagger- ing.
Beyond the basics of liability coverage and medical coverage you should review your policy to make sure you are covered for issues related to towing your boat on a trailer. Are you cov- ered for trip interruption and towing services in the event of a flat tire?
Not to be overlooked, is the opportunity to purchase cov- erage to protect you from the
repair cost of damage to the lower unit of your motor. Yup, you can get coverage for that and it’s not expensive. That could very important at this time of the year as debris from the winter melt and spring rains is still floating in the lake.
In all of the excitement around this weekend, let us not forget about the real reason for Memorial Day and it’s mean- ing. We honor the living Veter- ans in November with Veterans Day. Memorial Day is honoring those Armed Service members who served and are no longer with us. The phase “All Gave Some and Some Gave All” should be a stark reminder of how much we really do ask of those that serve. We should be forever grateful for their service.
As I recently heard the story
told, when asked for the proper response to being thanked for his service, an elder Veteran offered this as a simple reply – “I did it for you”. Such a fitting and elegantly simple yet incred- ibly powerful response.
While we use this day to honor those who served that are no longer with us, I’d like to draw your attention to a very worthwhile group that works hard to take care of those that served and that are still with us.
SWAM or Swim with a Mission is dedicated to providing sup- port services for New Hamp- shire Veterans.
Founded by Phil and Julie Taub of Hebron, SWAM has it’s roots in Newfound Lake where annually the SWAM fund raising event is held in July. This year the event will be held On July 13th. Please visit the SWAM website at swam.org and support this very worth- while organization. Remem-
bering the response of the elder Veteran, “I did it for you”, it is the least we can do for them.
