So, who would like to read a book that absolutely eviscer- ates your soul and makes you stare at a wall for three to seven hours despite knowing what you were getting yourself into? You might be surprised, but I do, in fact, have a book for you, then! I know what you’re thinking—why would I ever read a book that makes me sob uncontrollably and puts me in a depressed mood for days? Well, when the book is a sheer, unmatched masterpiece,
not guiding a tribute through the Games—he is the tribute. This prequel gives us a deeper look into Haymitch’s past and reveals the trials he faced during his own time in the arena. And, it is... devastating.
Haymitch’s games happens to be the Captiol’s Quarter Quell, where they pick four child trib- utes to compete in the games
rather than two. So Haymitch, and three other kids he grew up with, must say goodbye to their families and try to stay alive. But everyone knows that only one victor can come out of the infa- mous Hunger Games.
As we know Haymich in the Hunger Games to be rude and seemingly rotten, his sixteen- year-old version is nothing but kind, clever, and defiant. Seeing what happened to Haymitch to shape him into the desolate person he is in the future is both heartbreaking and unforgetta- ble. Like his future mentee, he is
defiant and quick witted to show the people of the Capitol that he is not someone who will bow to their will, but will give them entertainment at the same time. Haymitch is smart, and in order to bring luck to himself and his fellow tributes, he knows he has to play some version of the game to put on a show.
Book of the Month:
Sunrise on the Reaping By Suzanne Collins
you allow yourself to dive in and feel all of the feelings, and Sunrise on the Reaping is that book.
If you’re not familiar with the famous Hunger Games trilogy, I highly recommend you read the books or watch the movies. They are some of the best-writ- ten books with an interesting, wild plot. In a dystopian future, Katniss Everdeen fights to sur- vive a televised death match and becomes a symbol of rebellion against the oppressive Capitol. Sunrise on the Reaping takes place twenty-four years before Katniss’ story, but even before Ms. Kat- niss Everdeen came into play, a rebellion was quietly forming, and in this book, we see it begin to unfold.
Sunrise on the Reaping follows sixteen-year-old Haymitch Aber- nathy—best known in The Hun- ger Games as Katniss Everdeen’s sharp-tongued, perpetually drunk mentor. But this time, he’s
Sunrise on the Reaping is enter- taining, vulnerable, and abso- lutely cutthroat, and Collins’ writing pulls you into the story so vividly you might think you’re there fighting along Haymitch for survival. The political in- trigue and harrowing arena in which these 48 tributes fight mer- cilessly to the death show that the odds are stacked against Haymi- tch, who comes from the poorest district in Panem.
If you are a Hunger Games fan, there is no doubt you would want to pick up Sunrise on the Reap- ing. As someone who has loved this series since high school, see- ing Suzanne Collins expand on the universe has given me insight into more pivotal characters of this series and brings back a strong sense of nostalgia. But, make sure you have some tissues ready, because this is a tough one, and dont expect a happy ending.
