that opens time for reflection and communing with the natu- ral world. The fly rod gains us entry into the life of the river. Fly fishing gives you that feeling that every secret of the river is graspable with a little more care and sharpness exercising that part of me that finds joy in the finesse and power and the water around your legs giving you the feeling of buoyancy and wild- ness.
Speaking of fly fishing we are hosting a fly-casting work- shop in May on the pond in Hill off Crescent St. May 22nd from 6 – 7:30 pm. We will learn and practice 3 different cast- ing techniques and some knots to tie on fly line and flies. The main focus is getting our line out properly to attract a strike. Please see the class notes on the what’s happening this month page. We’ll see you on the river!

April showers bring May flowers I guess, I hope. Al- though, Winter had a hard hold on April and it was tough to get some nice Spring weather to encourage us to get outside and clean up the yard. Mud season held on a little too long creating work stoppage for the loggers, load limits posted on back roads and some construction proj- ects as they held off till the frost comes out of the soil.
With the frost now gone from the soil the plants and trees are free to explode with their green leafy foliage and the flowers will display a bountiful variety of beautiful form and color. May brings a forest of trees leafing out in their own response to the warming temperatures and increasing daylight that bring shade to the understory plants that thrive in this woodsy envi- ronment. The Shadblow tree or Serviceberry is one such small tree or understory woody shrub. One of the first to bloom after the ground thaws out with beautiful delicate white flowers in early May and then produc- ing little reddish purple berries that are a favorite of wildlife
and birds. And palatable to us if you can beat the birds to em. Serviceberry pie. Naturally oc- curring in our NH forests and along river beds it can also be planted in in your natural wild gardens in the landscapes around the property. The Shad- blow tree was named for its blossom time signaling the Shad run of Northeast rivers, the Connecticut river being one. If you happen upon a few of these remember where you found them and return in the fall for a beautiful orangy foliage display. A myriad of other new growth and blossoms continue through- out the month that gives great joy to be out on the trails im- proving our knowledge of the forest and of the little plants that thrive in these woody hab- itats. A walk a week will open the windows to new blossoming plants and shrubs along our chosen route. What about the Partridge Berry that I call the Wintergreen berry plant. Or the Canadian Dogwood some- times called bunchberry. Beau- tiful flowering groundcover plants on the forest floor of our NH woods. And many more purposefully arranged in their
habitats for us to enjoy. God has created this interconnected balance in the natural realm be- tween the water cycle, sunlight, photosynthesis and temperature within each habitat that favors dependent species to thrive in harmony with associate plants. And this in turn will favor the bugs, birds and animals that call these habitats home. As we explore and get to know these God designed relationships we find a comfort and an affinity in the physical realm with these habitats and with the creator.
Hey on a good Spring note the rivers and ponds are ice free and settled from the April rains for a good bit of fishin’ to be had this month. Rivers are free flowing and Trout ponds opened up the 4th Saturday in April. New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHF&G) has and will be stocking 3 species of Trout through June. They tar- get the Southern NH water-
bodies initially as those will be ice free and settled down from Spring runoff sooner than their Northern counterparts. They do a great job supplying Rain- bow, Brown and Brook Trout to NH waters throughout the Spring. Landlocked Salmon is a popular Spring fishery and they stock plenty in lakes and bigger rivers across the state. Many rivers and ponds are designated fly fishing only for these stocked fish species. Fly fishing is a craft that allows us to get into the rivers and ponds and use flies and streamers that mimic the food source that the fish are consuming on that day. The fly fisher needs to know a num- ber of biological systems such as bugs, hydrology, aquatic life and the fish we are targeting to have our best chance of catch- ing the wary salmonids or bass. We don’t always fish to catch in this craft as we find our time in the river gives us an escape
