Alexandria Volunteer Firefighters’ Association 31st Annual Ice Fishing Derby
 By Donna rhoDes
REGION – Winter in New Hampshire brings many kinds of outdoor recreational oppor- tunities and among them is ice fishing, whether it be from inside a warm bob house or sitting qui- etly by a hole in the ice, watching for flags on tip-ups or patiently working a jigging stick while waiting for a bite.
For those who love the thrill of pulling a rainbow or lake trout through the ice, February is when they can add to that fun by sign- ing up for a chance to win prizes at local ice fishing derbies bene- fitting area nonprofit groups.
The first derby of the month is the Great Meredith Rotary Ice Fishing Derby. Headquarters for the two-day event are located at Hesky Park off Rte. 3 in down- town Meredith, but fishing is open to any lake or pond in New
Hampshire. The derby, which is now in its 43rd year, attracts people from all over the country. Opening at 7 a.m. on Feb. 12, it runs until February 13, when all entries from anywhere in the state must be presented at head- quarters before the deadline. Weigh-in times are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m.until 3 p.m. on Sunday.
This year, the top three prizes are $15,000 for the first place fish, $5,000 for second place, and $3,000 for third place, but there are many other ways to walk away as a winner for different cash prizes, whether you are fish- ing or not. This event benefits Meredith Rotary and all its en- deavors. Entry fees for this event are $40 per person, and entry forms are available online at local vendors, such as Newfound Sales on Lake St. in Bristol, or online at www.icefishingnh.com.
Next up is the Webster Lake Fishing Derby, just a half-hour from Bristol down Rte. 3A in Franklin. The derby is also a
two-day event and very friendly for young anglers, first-time ice fishermen, and seasoned ice fish-
ermen.
