Her bravado, her guardedness, and her occasional ruthlessness all make sense now. This isn’t backstory; it’s the starting point of her pain. You understand ex- actly what she’s lost, and worse, you understand what it cost her to keep going.
The Assassin’s Blade is phe- nomenal in controlled emo- tional destruction. It’s gripping, heartbreaking, and just un- hinged enough to make me clutch the book like it personally wronged me. I loved it. I hated it. I would absolutely recom- mend it to anyone who is pre- pared to feel everything all at once—and then some.

I’m back with another re- view, and as I’ve been chugging through the Throne of Glass se- ries, I have finally made it to the phenomenal yet heartbreaking prequel. The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas is firmly one of the saddest books I have ever read, and I did not simply read this book—I survived it. Barely.
It is a collection of novellas that follows Celaena Sardothien before the events of Throne of Glass, and somehow Maas man- ages to make each story feel like a full emotional arc while also quietly breaking your heart. At
first, it almost feels fun—dan- gerous, yes, but adventurous. Celaena, as we know, is sharp, arrogant, wildly talented, and just self-aware enough to make you love her for her flaws instead of despite them. You watch her strut through the criminal un- derworld with this intoxicating mix of confidence and reckless- ness, and you think, “Yes, this is going to hurt me later, isn’t it?” And oh, it does.
What makes this book so devastating is how alive every- thing feels. The settings are wild, the stakes feel personal, and every side character some- how matters. Maas has this abil- ity to introduce someone, make you care about them deeply in approximately three pages, and then, well. Let’s just say emo- tional stability is not something she’s interested in preserving.
And then there’s Sam. I need to talk about Sam. Actually, no, I don’t want to talk about Sam, because thinking about Sam is how you end up spiraling. But
banter, their trust, the way they slowly become each other’s safe place. It sneaks up on you. You don’t realize how invested you are until it’s far too late to pro- tect yourself.
The final novella is where everything collapses in the most beautifully cruel way possible. You can see the tragedy com- ing. Maas wants you to see it. She practically lights it in neon and says, “Look. Look at what’s about to happen.” And some- how, even with all that warning, it still hits like a freight train.
