Hearing this, Gunny Dell wanted to be involved and ordered me to
go there as well to hear the information exchange. What would happen next
will forever leave an impact on myself and the other Marines involved in this
incident. For here, this is where I would truly see the desperation of extreme
shell-shocked enemy combatants. As we drove up, I was privy to hear Lt
Abdul and 1stLt D. Kindle of 2nd Platoon harshly speaking to the two men, of
whom were trying to explain that there is a huge group of Iraqi troops
wanting to surrender just over the next rise to our left.
A group of prisoners waiting over the rise in the background of this photo sent these two
POWs to intercept Delta Company as we were passing by. Gunny Dell and the Marine pictured
had just conducted a search of the prisoners. They would soon be stood up, hastily
interrogated by Lt Abdul and sent back to bring back the others to also surrender.
The two Iraqi soldiers in the previous photo ran back to return with a large group. Here is a
portion of that group that was separated and searched by Delta Marines. These troops were
petrified of the aircraft flying over the battlefield. We ordered the large group to stay in a tight
formation and march South waiving vigorously the white flags of surrender. They never
stopped looking skyward and requested that we escort them…which was denied.
