In the next moment 1stLt D. Kindle, 2nd Platoon Commander,
reported that he was observing three enemy tanks on the move coming
straight for us. “Delta 6, I’m observing troops in the hatches and in the
turrets. Two trucks are running Tail End Charlie for those tanks. All vehicles
are manned and on the move. Requesting permission to fire and bring up
TOW support.”
“Can you confirm enemy victors?”
“Affirmative. Enemy victors on the move.”
“OK Delta Two take them out. Delta Company, halt in place. Delta
Two, let’s get them quick.”
And with that 25mm chain gunfire erupted to the left of Gunny and
me. TOW rockets streaked downrange. Fireballs erupted and enemy troops
began to flee and those trapped were lost. The TOW rockets were an eerily
magnificent thing to observe as it fired. The sound of the rocket blast, the
smoke, and the Marine behind the gun sites all worked as one ferocious
team of devastation. I had seen so many TOW attacks but yet each time you
heard one of these ultra-weapons fire it would cause a cringe, knowing full
well that within seconds men were going to die.
A tube launched, optically tracked, and wire-guided anti-tank missile fired by the brave crews
of the TOW variants. These missiles were the secret weapon of Task Force Ripper and Delta
Reinforced. Here a very rare photo taken by the driver of American Hero, LCpl Marcus
Mitchell actually documents a combat scene from the front lines of Delta’s assault on the
enemy. We were in no-mans-land, nothing out in front but enemy forces.
