and Kuwaiti Air Force assets working in cohesion with our brave pilots. Truly
it was an intimidating coalition with fangs. And Delta, tonight, was under
that protective blanket.
The night wore on. Delta 7, my vehicle, fell underneath the umbrella
of the protective cover of Marines on watch rotating throughout Delta
Company. For months and months I had shared the watch but tonight I felt
so safe from all enemy threats that I simply grabbed my M16A2 service rifle
and my sleeping bag, climbed up on top of the LOG and found a safe and
sound night’s sleep. We were simply at this point invincible, and just before I
dozed off, I thought about something very important… I thought about my
mother’s beautiful face and a lifetime of encouraging words…. then I thought
about 80% casualties, and still not a scratch. I knew, beyond a shadow of a
doubt, we were closing in on Kuwait. For the first time, in a long time, I slept
in the open, weapon in hand…. Secure sleep.
