you can thread each of the strands into the center of the knot and down, and

splice in two more rounds of tucks.
With one end of the lanyard complete, lace it through the fender and tie the
second knot. The process for the second knot is almost exactly like the first, but
it’s more awkward because the line is strung through the fender. The whipping
for the second knot is applied to the line 4½ inches (112 mm) from the fender.

Sewing the canvas fender sleeve is pretty straightforward. First, fold the long
edges over to form ¾-inch (19 mm) hems and stitch them, either on a machine or
by hand. On the two ends, fold the material to form hems approximately 1 inch
(25 mm) wide around each of the laces; again, stitch these either by hand or on a
machine.

Wrap the canvas cover around the fender and complete the job with needle,
strong whipping twine, and the “invisible stitch,” as shown in the illustration.
