The Cat’s Paw is a simple but elegant knot designed to reduce the chances of a
heavy load slipping off the hook of a block and tackle. Twist the loops as shown
into the sling holding the cargo, then drop the loops over the hook. It won’t jam,
and it will spill instantly when removed from the hook.
A bend is called for when the time comes to tie two ends of rope together. The
most common bend, although not the best, is the Square Knot, or Reef Knot. A
square knot should not slip if it is tied with two ends of the same size, but it can
