PURPOSE
To help participants become more receptive to the change in “the way things are done” and really have a chance to purposely “think outside the box.”
DESCRIPTION
Participants will look at ordinary objects in a new way as a “trial run” for the new ways they will be asked to look at the organization, their jobs and the way we care for elders.
PARTICIPANTS 8 – 12
TIME
About 5 minutes for each object
SUPPLIES
About 6 common objects
Steps:
• The facilitator should collect several objects not necessarily related to the nursing home and several that many people in the group use every day.
• Break up the group into pairs. Starting with something that is not necessarily nursing home related, present an object to the group. Give the pairs a couple of minutes to come up with another use for the item than what it is meant for. It doesn’t need to actually work well for its new purpose, be compliant or even serious. For instance: a pencil used to hold one’s hair in a bun, a rubber glove to make the hands of a scarecrow, a lampshade put around a dog’s neck so he doesn’t chew out his stitches. Then ask the pairs to share their ideas.
• Move on to the next object, doing the same procedure. You will likely see the ideas get more creative with each new object.
