PURPOSE
To jump start a project.
DESCRIPTION
An Action Team figures out the who, what, when, where, why and how of undertaking a specific change.
PARTICIPANTS Action Team
TIME
15 minutes at the start of a meeting
SUPPLIES paper and pens
Steps:
• Articulate the project at hand. (This Action Team has been formed in order to redesign the way we do dining, for example.) It’s a big project that will involve many elements and people. It’s may be hard to know where to start, so let’s look at all the variables and decide how to address them.
• Divide the group up into six pairs or groups, one for each W and the H. Each team gets one of the following: who, what, when, where, why or how. Ask each group to think of as many questions that will need to be addressed as they can (starting with their question word). For example: Where will breakfast be prepared? Who will decide the menu? How will the menu be decided? Give the team 10 minutes to brainstorm and write down their questions.
• Collect the papers and have them typed up and copied for each member of the team for use in subsequent meetings. It can be considered your long-running agenda.
