PURPOSE
To collect and share information about the organization, elders, training topics, culture change initiatives or anything else the team is tackling.
DESCRIPTION
Participants search out information over a short period of time, bringing it back to the
whole group and come to understand that together they are more effective than individually.
PARTICIPANTS
The Action, Steering, Neighborhood or Household team.
TIME
The first part will happen over a period of days. The group activity takes about 15 minutes.
SUPPLIES
Quarters, candy or trinkets – all the same, one for each member of the group.
Steps:
• Phase 1- hunting info
• Participants are asked to collect info related to the team’s purpose. Write up
questions such as: How does “Such-n-Such” nursing home do open breakfast? What are our household’s residents’ favorite meals? What are some alternatives to “hoist and dunk” bathing? Each participant gets a question and should get the answer, write it down and bring it to the next meeting. This can be done during what is often called the “study phase” in culture change.
• Phase 2 – sharing info
• Get enough quarters, wrapped candy or trinkets for each person to have one.
They should all be the exact same thing. Pass them out to the group.
• Once everybody has one, ask somebody to swap his or her quarter for yours. Then
ask that person to swap with someone else, and that person to swap with someone else. Ask: “Is anyone better off now that we have swapped?” Then explain that
by swapping the information we’ve gathered, everyone will have more than they started with because they learned something new
• Ask everyone to share his or her question and answer. Have someone record the information and have it typed up for use and reference in the team’s future work.
