PURPOSE
To have people use problem-solving skills and creativity to come up with ways to help each other with new practices or procedures which have come about through culture change.
DESCRIPTION
Participants will think of ways to make their jobs easier, more efficient or person-centered and present them to the rest of the team.
PARTICIPANTS
the Action, Steering, Neighborhood or Household Team
TIME
30 minutes, or alternatively 5 minutes in initial team meeting, the span of time between meetings and 10 minutes during second meeting.
Steps:
• Ask for volunteers to give examples of things either at work or home that they have used to “make life easier.” For example: a specific place where all the bills to be paid go in your house. Or, a key that is used by several people throughout the day that is kept on a coil bracelet so it never gets lost in someone’s pocket.
• Now, ask the team to come up with something that will help people with “the new way things are done.” For example: at Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, KS, the household team was having inconsistent cleaning results with staff having blended roles. The team decided to type up a step-by-step instruction sheet for each cleaning task detailing everything that needed to be done, right down to “put on gloves.”
This step can be given as homework to bring back to the next meeting so people have a chance to think about it as they do their jobs. If you want to see what people can come up with off the top of their heads, give the small groups 10 minutes to brainstorm. In either case, they don’t have to make it happen, just have the idea.
• Bring everyone back together and have each group present their idea. Perhaps have the group vote for the best one and offer a prize.
• As a whole group, decide which ideas you are interested in implementing and how you will make them happen. Consider sharing these ideas with the rest of the organization.
