PURPOSE
To realize the importance of daily pleasures in our lives and those of the elders living in nursing homes. Most of us would say we are shaped by the mean- ing and purpose that we infuse into our lives - whether that be about faith, family or community. While these values guide and motivate our progress in life, it is often the small pleasures in daily living that help us get through the day.
DESCRIPTION
Teams discuss their daily pleasures and how to make daily pleasures part of elders’ lives in nursing homes.
PARTICIPANTS
Tables or circles of 6-8, can be any number of tables or circles
TIME
15 minutes
SUPPLIES pen and paper
for scribes
Steps:
• Choose a leader, process coach, timekeeper and scribe. Leader: Have everyone read the instructions. (5 minutes)
• Leader: Ask participants to share one of their daily pleasures. Share your daily pleasure as well.
• Process coach: Participate as a member and share your daily pleasure, but also try to pay attention as to whether everyone understands the instructions and is engaged in the process.
• Time keeper: Participate as a member, but watch your time and let everyone know when they have 1 minute left and when time to move to the next step. (Total for this step 5 minutes)
• Leader: Of the daily pleasures given by the group members, ask participants to choose the most difficult pleasure to make happen for a resident in a nursing home. How could you make it happen. Everyone should participate in “care planning” this pleasure.
• Scribe: Please take notes of the care plan and be prepared to share into the full group.
• Trainer may bring all the tables or circles together to debrief the experience. Ask what were
some of the pleasures (limit to 3 or 4) What was one of the hardest to accomplish for a resident
in a nursing home? How can we begin to identify people’s daily pleasures and make them happen?
