PURPOSE
To assist participants in recognizing the differ- ence between hierarchical management and team management. The experience provided helps the individuals discuss the differences and see how the ideas apply to the real world.
DESCRIPTION
An energizing exercise that can take place indoors or outdoors. Participants have to do a
task with feet tied together and managed by the “administrators.” The group then gets a chance to do it differently and discuss what makes sense about each way.
PARTICIPANTS 8 – 40
TIME
30 minutes
SUPPLIES
6-8 hoola hoops,
larger soft rope
cut in 2-foot lengths,
flat large space to do the activity
Steps:
• Away from the rest of the group explain to the administrator and the DON that they
have to get the group to go over the hoola hoops always having one foot in a hoop until the whole group gets to the end of the hoola path. Explain that they are to give directions on how to do this and then go to a “meeting” and be unavailable.
• Have the administrator and DON give directions.
• You ask the spotters to help as the group moves along the hoola path. Be very observant
of safety, stepping in if there is any concern - or standing near anyone concerning you so
you can support them if needed.
• When they get through ask, “How did it go? Why was it hard? What would make it
better?”
• Give them a chance to follow the same rules (tied together, foot always in a hoop),
but decide themselves how to do it.
• Give the group another chance, they may involve the administrator and DON if they wish.
• Debrief again. Make sure to guide the discussion to the difference between being directed
and self-directing. Ask how each felt? Ask how efficient each way was?
