PURPOSE
To determine the drivers and restrainers of a particular change and use that knowledge to see how the restrainers can be overcome.
DESCRIPTION
Participants list the things a change has going against it or for it and problem-solve to tip the scale in favor of the change.
PARTICIPANTS Team
TIME 15 minutes
SUPPLIES Flipchart and markers
Steps:
• Identify the change the group will discuss – perhaps open breakfast, self-scheduling, permanent staffing, etc. Write it across the top of a flip chart and draw a line down the middle of the paper below it. One side of the paper will be for drivers and the other side for restrainers.
• Ask the group to volunteer examples of the things that are driving the change. For example: happier residents, better relationships, the Steering Team, physical renovations. Write them on the flip chart.
• Then ask for restrainers. For example: money, staff’s institutionalized mind-set, not enough information. Then write those on the flip chart under restrainers.
• Some things, such as regulations, may end up on both lists.
• Go down each list and ask the group to rate the strength of each driver and restrainer – low,
medium, high. This may bring about some discussion.
• Now, with the group, see if there are any restrainers that can be overcome by any of the drivers.
• With any restrainers left, break up the group into smaller groups or pairs and ask each smaller
group to take one of the restrainers and brainstorm ways of overcoming it.
• Bring the group back together and ask each smaller group to share their ideas.
• You will have a good assessment of the change climate that can guide you as you make the
change. You may even want to formulate some action steps based on the results that you can start right away.
