What is the Victorian Young Leaders to Indonesia Program?
The Victorian Young Leaders to Indonesia (VYL Indonesia) Program offers five weeks language and cultural overseas immersion program for 40 Year 9 students and accompanying teachers in 2020.
Program Objectives
The program will:
• build students' intercultural understanding and ability to effectively engage with people from other
cultures through the development of personal relationships with their Indonesian peers
• develop students' Indonesian language abilities and inspire language study through to VCE
• develop students' global citizenship and leadership capabilities.
What is the VYL Indonesia Program?
The VYL Indonesia Program is delivered by the Department of Education and Training (the Department). It brings together students and teachers from selected Victorian schools to participate in the program, made up of three phases:
• pre-departure phase, which prepares students and accompanying teachers for the program. This
phase focuses on building country-specific knowledge about Indonesia, developing intercultural capability, managing cultural adjustment and student welfare, and setting expectations for the overseas cultural immersion component
• in-country immersion program, which includes spending five weeks in Indonesia, being hosted by a local school, improving Indonesian language skills, developing friendships with Indonesian peers (including student buddies), staying with a host family for part of the trip, and undertaking a range of excursions exploring Indonesian history and culture
• post-return phase, which provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and successes of participating students and teachers, facilitates reflection and sharing of learning to sustain the skills developed, promote the program to other students and teachers, and support continued engagement with Indonesia.

Applications are now open for the 2020 Victorian Young Leaders to Indonesia Program (travelling in August-September/ end of Term 3, 2020) and close Friday 21 February 2020.
