WRITING IMAGE CAPTION
A cutline or caption is the text that is printed with an image or graphic as part os a story. It
should provide clear and accurate information that supplements the image. Since photos
and graphics often correspond with a sory, you should avoid repeating information that is
already in the story as often as possible.
WRITING CAPTIONS
When you write a photo caption, there are some rules that you have to follow.
1. Supply specific information (answering 5 WH-Questions)
Who/What/When/Where/Why/How
2. Use the present tense to describe action in the photo.
3. Captions are written in a complete sentence, a caption may have three
sentences.
4. Clearly identify the people and location that appear in the photo.
5. For photographs or more than one person, identity from left to right. In case of
large groups, identify only the notable people.
Never include personal feelings. The feelings and emotions are for readers to
decide.
