  PADDLETHON 2019
Doug Bullock
The inaugural RCYC Paddlethon in support of the Ronald McDonald House Toronto (RMHT) was held on Sunday, August 18th. Over 100 Members gathered to paddle their canoes, kayaks, dinghies, stand up boards and other floating devices around the South Island in a fundraiser that raised $20,300.
Commodore Keating and Megan Long lead the effort to create awareness for and raise funds for this truly worthwhile charity. The Ronald McDonald House at 240 McCaul Street, right in our City Clubhouse neighbourhood, provides 81 rooms for families while their children are being treated at Sick Kids and other University Avenue Hospitals. It is truly a special place that needs our support. Families helping families.
The day started off with a cannon blast from the Rainbow Bridge with all the paddlers completing a fun course around South Island. Every paddler had to stop at George Cohon’s McHappy III Hinckley power boat to have their photograph taken and say hi to the RMHT Family that was on board to enjoy the event.
Awards were given out to the paddlers who really got into the spirit of the event in both dress and the “anything that floats” approach to the Paddlethon. The Best Team award went to Margaret Winter and
her team of Pirates who commandeered an Ideal 18 without a mast. The Best Boat went to the Hill family who paddled their two children and dog around the Island on a blow up raft. Bart Meuring won Best Paddler for his lounge chair and “duct taped together” paddle. The Best Dressed was won by Kevin Dunal and Sian Roberts for their Tropical Island attire who were on stand up paddle boards.
