FOSTERING A VIBRANT SAILING COMMUNITY: THE IDEAL 18 FLEET 2019
Michele Clemo and the Ideal 18 Fleet
The Ideal 18 Program had yet another incredibly successful year with a competitive Club racing program, Women’s Racing and Social Sailing, and Learn-to-Sail and private training programs. The fleet is also proving to be a valued Club asset for attracting new Members as an entry point into the sailing community at RCYC.
The Ideal 18 fleet was off to an early start with an Open House for Fleet Racing, Women’s Sailing and Racing, and the new Member and Learn-to-Sail program. At the annual Ideal 18 work party and potluck many hands made light work of boat prep and mast stepping and was a fantastic opportunity for new Members to meet fellow Ideal 18 enthusiasts. The boats were barely in the water before our first event took place, a Rust Remover evening at the City Clubhouse with sailing legends Karen McRae, Martha Henderson and Pat Healy. It was followed by an on-the-water Rust Remover session conducted by Program Coordinator, Jenny Farrand along with I14 sailor and RCYC Adult Sailing Instructor Aaron Strahle.
The Ideal 18 fleet participated in a number of mentorship programs such as the new Member TGIF which paired more experienced sailors with interested beginners and future fleet members.
Throughout the season, members of the Ideal 18 program had additional opportunities to participate
