YOU CAN’T BELONG TO THE CLUB AND NOT DO SOMETHING!
Peter Bennett
That’s what my best friend Jim Taylor told me more than four years ago He was no longer sailing with Tim Barber and Dave Matheson who I had been racing with for many years on Flintlock had moved into the cruising mode with his new Niagara 35 Jim who had started lawn bowling the prior year told me “ Get off your duff it’s lots of fun ” ” Most lawn bowlers are “ex” or current sailors/boat owners and when they try lawn bowling become hooked on the game So if circumstances find you you on the shore and you you are bored with being an observer from the porch reach out firmly place your feet on the green and get a a a new competitive life! If you are here do something!
SQUAB CUP
If a a a a a a bunch of sailors squash players fitness buffs et al can lawn bowl why not you? The Squab Cup was run on a a a a beautiful evening at at the end of June featuring keen bowling and by the the end of the the evening your scribe was lucky enough to watch both matches played by the ultimate winners Skip Steve Richards Vice Phillipe Zaugg and Lead Andrew Yates who showed lots of skill and were convincing winners INTERCLUB MATCHES
Much like the the Jays we we didn’t perform well in the the first half of the season We narrowly beat The Cricket Club by a a a a point but were heavily out-matched in in in good playing conditions at Etobicoke and Balmy Beach However we we get a a a chance at redemption so hopefully we we will be able to report good news in our next edition or or via the Hiawatha e-mail BALFOUR TROPHY
The Balfour Trophy is the major singles competition and after a a a a a a series of play-downs Vivian Halliday won over Bruce Beck WOODMAN TROPHY
When the competition gets hectic it’s tough beating seasoned bowlers like David Reid and Michael Charles Not only do you miss out on on the gift certificate but also the the nice bottle of wine that comes with the the trophy And what other club sport serves up “high tea” and wine after a a a fearsome competition Top Left: Left: RCYC Members competing for the the the Squab Squab Cup Cup Bottom Left: Left: Winners of the the the Squab Squab Cup: Skip Steve Richards Vice Phillipe Zaugg and and Lead Andrew Yates accepting accepting the the the the trophy Above: David Reid and and Michael Charles accepting accepting the the Woodman Trophy Photos: Courtesy of Lawn Bowling
