AT LAST! OUT ON THE REAL GREEN
Peter Bennett
Short mat bowling is a lot of fun and it was kind of neat at Sailebration to have our mat alongside amazing high–tech racing machines such as the Moth. I can remember earlier iterations of the Moth when I started sailing back at the AYC in Halifax in the early 50’s and they were a bit odd looking then, but nothing as remarkable as the current version. You won’t see any of our Lawn Bowlers flying over the waves in a Moth!
We had lots of folks young and old try out bowling on the mat with some surprisingly skilled shots – definitely a popular Sailebration feature.
While sailors might be patting bottoms in February, Lawn Bowlers find a nice Saturday early in May to clean out the bowling locker and polish and catalogue our many sets of bowls. For your efforts you may get a cracker and a bit of cheese and a well deserved thank you for immersing your hands in lukewarm sudsy water
for an hour or so. But never fear, opening day was only a week away and you hope the incredible skills you picked up short mat bowling are transferable to the ”real green” or as they say in baseball “the bigs”.
The first trophy competition was the Fernwood Cup and the skills of Joan Taschuk, Sue Macaulay and Margaret Taylor prevailed. By the time you read this bit of news we will have been to the Etobicoke LBC for the first interclub match. Etobicoke operates from a great setting out on Islington just south of Dundas. We take a launch and at Etobicoke you must cross a bridge over the burbling Mimico Creek. Last year we lost the home series by two points. Later, in June we were at The Cricket Club – always a very competitive series. Hopefully we can report favourable outcomes in both matches.
