LIFE IS SWEET ON POWER FLEET STREET
George Grant, Power Fleet Executive Member at Large
On behalf of the Power Fleet Executive, I am pleased to have the opportunity to share some information with Club Members about our modest but active fleet. Most of our yachts are docked on South Island. We have named our area Power Fleet Street, which is far more appealing than Stink Pot Row or Gasoline Alley. There are currently sixteen Power Yachts in our Fleet at RCYC with 68 Power Fleet members, including associates.
A number of notable RCYC Members have belonged to Power Fleet over the years Including Paul Phelan, Alan Lamport, Harold Shield, Erwin Hart, Don Lomax, Chuck Parmalee and David Howard.
I am pleased to note that following Peter Sherman’s suggestion at our AGM, Commodore David Howard has graciously agreed to become Honourary Power Fleet Captain. Having recently celebrated his 100th birthday, he did caution us that he was only prepared to serve for the next fifteen years.
Power Fleet has hosted a number of events open to all RCYC Members & guests. “Margaritaville” and “The British Invasion” themes of past years will be followed
by “The Flower Power Fleet Summer of Love” on Friday, July 13th. Check our ad in this issue of the Kwasind and online for more information. TGIF will be joining us and we invite you to come along as well.
The RCYC Power Fleet is dedicated to Club service and we strive to be a positive catalyst in helping promote Club harmony among our fleets. There is significant history associated with RCYC Power Fleet. Among our Fleet Trophies, the impressive Burkholder Trophy is in the process of being reactivated. It recognizes outstanding achievement while being a member of the Power Fleet. Don Lomax and Patrick Gillen are handling the reactivation.
We look forward to seeing many of you at “The Flower Power Fleet Summer of Love” on Friday, July 13th.
On behalf of Brigitte Hamilton, Power Fleet Captain, Maureen Taylor, Secretary/Treasurer, and Nancy Grant, Social Convenor, our best wishes for a great season for all sailors, whether your choice be power or sail.
