RCYC RACE TEAM – SAILORS WINTER UPDATE: 2019 HEMPEL WORLD CUP SERIES MIAMI

Miami was again the host for the Hempel World Cup Series Miami. This North American premier Olympic- class regatta is a must stop on the winter circuit for the best sailors in the world campaigning for the next Olympics in Tokyo 2020. It also happens to be the only North American regatta included in
World Sailings 2019 Hempel World Cup Series. And RCYC’s Race Team had three Members competing:
Tom Ramshaw, Finn: Finishing 2nd in the medal race, Tom finished 4th in a fleet of 27 boats. Tom, with a terrific 5th place finish in the World Sailing Championships last summer in Denmark, secured an Olympic berth for Canada in the Finn class;
Robert Davis, Laser: Robert finished 28th in this 101 boat hyper-competitive fleet has entrants from 45 countries from around the globe. Robert is fresh off a terrific 3rd place finish in the U.S. Laser Nationals where he
secured a spot to represent Canada, and our Club, in the 2019 Pan Am Games this summer in Lima;
Mariah Millen, with Alexandra Tenhove of KYC, qualified for the Pan Am Games! They finished 32nd in this 35 boat fleet.
Noah Collinson (Laser), who was having a very good start at the Laser U.S. Nationals and planned to sail in Miami, had to withdraw due to a knee injury. Noah is recovering well and is targeting to be back on the water for the Laser Mid-Winters in Clearwater. Get well Noah.
By the time you read this, many RCYC Race Team members will have competed in multiple additional winter events including the Skiff midwinters, the Laser midwinters and March break training camps.
RCYC’s Race Team sailors represent our Club in the best way around the world, and they need our support. Planning is underway for a terrific fundraising event to be held April 25th at the City Clubhouse. You’ll be hearing much more about this exciting event shortly but for now mark your calendars and please plan to attend and support our sailors!
