The Jug Sling

The jug sling is a special-purpose knot that originated ashore as a
makeshift horse bridle, but has found particular usefulness in provisioning
or unloading a boat. Drawn up tight around the mouth of a large water

bottle, it forms a pair of reliable rope handles for hauling bulky liquid
containers from shore to ship or vice versa.

               1. The first step in tying a jug sling is to make a simple noose. This is
most quickly done by fashioning an overhand knot with a bight from the
standing part pulled through the turn, as above. Do not pull the overhand

knot tight, and be sure the noose formed is a foot or more in diameter.
