Ganapati Trail of Mumbai- Cele brate the Festival of
Faith!!
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations were initiated by the great
Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to promote
culture and nationalism. It has continued since then. It is
believed that Lord Ganapati was the family deity of the
Peshwas. Lokmanya Tilak had popularized this festival to
bridge the gap between the Brahmins and Non-Brahmins.
This celebration is about the birth of the Elephant-headed
god, Ganesha. Not just restricted to India, his image is found
even in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Nepal. Devotion to Ganesha
is widely diffused and extends to Jains and Buddhists.
Known by 108 names, but most commonly as “Ganesh”,
“Ganeshaa”, “Ganpati” or more fondly just as “Bappa”
Bappa’s birth anniversary celebrations usually last for 10
days. People install idols in their homes or in big pandals.
The first day is the “isthapna” and the last day is “visarjan”.
The one thing that remains in common through this time is
the offering of various sweets and savories to the deity—the
most common is “modak” which is the people’s favorite!
