•     THIEF KNOT

                                           According to legend, sailors on whaling ships
                                           used this knot to tie their clothes bags. Thieves
                                           would retie them with reef knots, thus
                                           revealing that the bags had been burgled. The
                                           thief knot is very similar to the reef knot, but
                                           the short ends are on opposite sides.
