Hazelbrae Home for Girls

Hazelbrae was officially opened July 22,
1883 when the first group of 150 chil-
            dren arrived. While originally welcoming
boys and girls alike, the home soon became
girls-only, as a separate home for boys was
founded in Toronto. Girls under the age of
12 were typically boarded out (or adopted
in some cases), while those aged 14 and old-
er were placed out in paid employment.

There was a 3-year period where girls were
stopped from coming to Canada by Bar- In 1912, the home was re-named “The
nardo’s, as it was found that Hazelbrae had Margaret Cox Home” for girls, in hon-
fallen into a sorry state with poor manage- our of the wife of George A. Cox,
ment and supervision. The couple acting as the original benefactor who donated
superintendents at the time were released the home to Barnardo. The Home
from their positions, replaced, and Hazel- remained active until 1922, when if
brae again resumed its activities as a girls eventually closed, after having nearly

receiving home. 10,000 children pass through its doors.
