Hazelbrae Home for Girls
Hazelbrae was officially opened July 22,
1883 when the first group of 150 chil-
dren arrived. While originally welcoming
boys and girls alike, the home soon became
girls-only, as a separate home for boys was
founded in Toronto. Girls under the age of
12 were typically boarded out (or adopted
in some cases), while those aged 14 and old-
er were placed out in paid employment.
There was a 3-year period where girls were
