Barnardo’s Training Farm
in Russell, Manitoba
Located 3.5 miles outside of Russell, Manitoba,
Barnardo’s Russell Training Farm was con-
structed in 1887, to house up to 100 boys, and
the first group arrived on April 15, 1888. Boys
selected for the farm in Manitoba were sent from
England with a signed agreement to work on
the farm for one year with a wage, before being
placed out.
This agreement was
signed by Frederick
Fairweather from
Liverpool, who
arrived at Barnar-
do’s Russeell Farm
in 1892 at the age
of 18.
