“Quite right,” I said, “my sentiment exactly” Stephen also adds he is now divorced and he’d never got the idea past the missus…“Quite right”, I said, looking up my lawyer’s num-ber... Only kidding as I’m lucky enough to have a wife who loves the smell of petrol as much as I do. So what are the frst steps and why GT4 racing? I ask. The answer is quite business-like. He had discussed going racing with his friend David Price, now a key part of his team, Bullitt racing. David suggested they look at a modern car rather than a classic, he likes gentleman’s racing, but a modern GT car is safer, so they agreed on a McLaren as it offers them a competitive car for the GT4 class with great factory back up. Stephen likes to build things so setting up the team and getting the right personnel is all part of the enjoyment for him. Bring-ing in experienced racer Andy Meyrick was also a smart move. I watch Andy and Stephen out on the circuit and we discuss the step up from the track days we’ve all done. It’s a lot different out there on a grid with 30 cars which are all well matched and thirty drivers all hell bent on winning.
