Throughout the time before the imminent of Christ, people used to offer sacrifices of
different breeds so that they would be righteous before the eyes of God. Right standing
with God to them concerned the garment of self-righteousness, where by you apply
your efforts to please God. Day in and day out, repentant sinner brought his offering
without blemish (no spot, male and acquitted) to the entrance of the tabernacle and, he
would place his hands on the head of his offering and confess all his sins and
wickedness, then the iniquities would transfer to the animal and the innocence of the
animal to the man, that animal is then killed, shedding its blood since the life of a flesh
is in the blood (Leviticus 17:11). The blood was then taken into the Holy place yet the
flesh was given to the priests. Why to the priests? Moses queries the Priests that “Why
didn’t you eat the sin offering at the sacred place? It’s most holy and he has given it to
you so that you may bear the punishment for the iniquity of the entire congregation
and make atonement for them in the LORD’s presence”. There was something
exceptional called the Day of the Atonement, which was implemented yearly by the
Priests. Two kids of goats were taken in, one for the Lord and the other for scapegoat.
The one which was of the Lord was slain for the sins of the people, and its blood was
sprinkled upon the mercy seat and before the mercy seat, upon the altar of incense that
was before the veil. The other goat called ‘scapegoat’, was taken by a Priest and he
would lay his hands upon the head of the goat and confess all the sins of the children
of Israel, and the goat was propelled to the wilderness carrying all the sins to a place
that was not habited. The man who would lead the goat was required to wash himself
and his garments before he would come to the dwelling places. This was all done to
purify and take away their sins.
Now all this was a mere shadow of things to come which were pointing to Christ, who
is the once off sacrifice (Colossians 2:17). If now that was the case then it means, the
sacrifices that were done by Leviticus did not wash away sins forever or it was temporal,
yet it was only time-based till the upcoming of the Messiah. John the Baptist says to the
people, “behold, here is the Lamp of God who takes away the sins of the world”, now
people did not understand what John meant, since what he said was spiritual. The
