BiTS INTERVIEW: Gary Nicholson
Gary Nicholson is a Hall of Fame songwriter and Grammy™ winner with
credits in multiple genres including country (Willie Nelson), blues (BB
King), pop (Ringo Starr), rock (Fleetwood Mac), folk (John Prine),
bluegrass (Del McCoury), Americana (Guy Clark) with over 700
recordings of his works, often in collaboration with the most iconic
musical artists of our time.
Ian McKenzie spoke to him at his home in Nashville, TN
GN: Hello.
BiTS: Good morning, Mr Nicholson. It's Ian McKenzie in England. Are you expecting my call? I
hope you are.
GN: Yes, I am.
BiTS: Jolly good. May I call you Gary, please?
GN: Yes, that’s great.
BiTS: What I want to talk to you about,
Gary, is the new record, of course, but
also some background stuff. I'm pretty
sure that although some of your songs
may be known, the people in the UK
don't know much about you. Would you
tell me something about your life?
Where were you born and raised?
GN: I was born in Commerce, Texas and
raised in the Dallas area in a little town
called Garland, Texas. I graduated from
South Garland High School in 1968 and
went to school at North Texas State
University for two years. I then moved
to Hollywood when I was 20 years old
and made a few records in California
with a group called Uncle Jim's Music.
We made two albums together with that
group. I returned to Texas throughout
the 70s and began working with my
friend Delbert McClinton, and then I
moved to Nashville in 1980, and began
playing guitar with Guy Clark and Billy
